A recent study reveals that patients who discontinue blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain reduced body mass far faster than those who stop traditional lifestyle programs.
Findings released in a major health publication shows that while obese people often shed about a fifth of their body weight while using the jabs, the mass is regained at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.
"People using such medications should be informed of the potential of fast weight regain when the medication ends," cautioned researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of regain means a return to starting weight in about a year and a half.
Comparing Treatments
The analysis, which reviewed 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the results of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.
Researchers point out that individuals who shed pounds through diet and exercise typically experience a less rapid weight regain—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.
Explaining the Quick Rebound
Doctors propose the mode of action of the injections accounts for the amplified regain.
These medications copy a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.
"Sustained high doses of the hormone concentrations far above than normal could lead to the body to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and may also diminish responsiveness to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.
"Withdrawal of this hormone supplement results in hunger is uncontrolled, making binge eating much more probable."
A Lifelong Condition?
The NHS advise the injections for individuals with obesity-related health risks, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.
Many experts contend that, considering the high risk of relapse, the treatment is often long-term.
This opinion is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who note that the findings "emphasize the long-term character of obesity," similar to managing diseases like diabetes.
Patient Accounts
Users who have discontinued the medication describe a powerful resurgence of cravings.
"It was like something activating and you become ravenous," recalled a patient.
The struggle is exacerbated if users have not adopted sustainable lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.
Significant Use
Figures indicate that millions of people in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with interest continuing to grow.
- Use is higher among females than males.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest usage rates.
- Many obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
Ultimately, experts stress that while the jabs are effective agents for weight loss, they are not a permanent cure and maintained weight loss hinges on combined behavioural management.
